Chennai is a thriving metropolis with a bustling city centre. The fourth largest city in India, Chennai, formerly Madras, is the capital of the coastal region Tamil Nadu and looks out over India’s spectacular Bay of Bengal. With its rich heritage and coastal proximity, Chennai offers many opportunities for tourist activities from site seeing to water sports.

When the time comes to either relax and unwind or get out of the city altogether, outer Chennai offers a wealth of opportunities, from ancient temples to world renowned beaches and modern cinemas.

One of the most popular ways to unwind in Chennai is to visit one of three central or nearby beaches. Elliot, Marina and Covelong beaches are all individually spectacular. Elliot Beach is renowned as one of the most pristine beaches in Tamil Nadu; its calm and tranquil surround, uncluttered by minimal retail development, means it’s ideal for a relaxing walk, or swim. Marina Beach is Chennai’s best known; at over 12km in length, it’s also one of the world’s longest beaches and is situated just north of Elliot. Covelong Beach is equally highly regarded on the Coromandel Coast of India. At around 40km south of Chennai and surrounded by shops and cafes, Covelong Beach makes for an ideal day trip for young and old alike.

A common site at many waterside areas of Chennai is people participating in water sports, whether adventurous or tranquil by nature. Popular activities include water skiing, scuba diving, wake boarding, banana boat riding and kayaking, while boats trips, fishing and swimming are more popular for those looking for something a little more sedate.

Life by the beach may sustain some for many hours, but if you prefer to be more active, then you’ll be pleased to hear that there are equally ample opportunities to get out and about in surrounding Chennai and Tamil Nadu to see the sights of ancient and modern India.

Tourist sites of interest offer an interesting insight into how centuries of traditional Indian civilisation came to live side by side with the modern hand of British colonialism. To glimpse traditional Chennai, visit Mahabalipuram – once the seat of the Pallava Kings and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located 60KM outside Chennai in the Kanchipuram District. Mahabalipuram’s intricate stone-cut temples and architecture stem from the 7th and 9th centuries AD and make for an enthralling day out.

Thanjavur is yet another historical site that’s well worth a visit on any trip to Chennai. As Thanjavur is located slightly further away from Chennai city, roughly 350km south, it makes for an ideal long day trip or short overnight break. This particular site was the royal seat of the Chola Kingdom between the 9th and 13th Centuries. Also known as the Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu, this area was prolific in the production of grain. Thanjavur makes for a fascinating visit; fit with palaces, temples and even an 18th century library full of delicate manuscripts.

For something altogether more modern, you could enjoy a visit to the Crocodile Bank, where founder Romulus Whitaker’s work to conserve three main species of native crocodile continues. The Mugger, Gharial and saltwater crocodile all have a home at the Bank. The rescue and conservation centre is spread across 3.2 hectares and has an impressive population of over 2,400 reptiles, making for an interesting and full day out, in Chennai.

With so much to offer, Chennai makes for a great holiday destination and with flights to Chennai now more available and faster than ever, you could be discovering the sites and sounds of India’s east coast, in no time.

One of the most revered and a famous temple of India is the Dakshineshwar Kali temple in the Hoogli district on the banks of the sacred Ganges. This temple rose to fame with its association with the greatest spiritual masters of all times. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

The temple which is a century and a half old was originally founded by the renowned queen of Janbazar Rani Rasmani in 1847. The queen had made all arrangements to go to Banaras and install an edifice devoted to exalted purposes of the divine mother. However the same night the wealthy widow dreamed the Divine Mother, in the form of the goddess Kali.

She appeared to the Rani in a dream and said, “There is not need to go to Banaras. Install my statue in a beautiful temple on the banks of the Ganges River and arrange for my worship there. Then I shall manifest myself in the image and accept the unquestionable and uncritical love of my ardent followers at that place.”

Affected to a great depth by the dream psychologically, Rani immediately purchased the land adjoining the Ganges from a Mr. Hasti, and responsively began construction of the temple. It took 8 years for the temple construction to end and an estimated 9 lakhs was the total expenditure borne. The temple, built in conventional Nava-Ratna style, measuring 46 feet square and rising over hundred feet high is a large elongated building standing on a high platform with a flight of stairs. It is one of the largest temples of kolkatha and a true architectural masterpiece.

The temple has a lot of mysticism colligated with it. The great Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was so immersed in veneration that he would be lost in his spiritual trance becoming totally unconscious of the external world (material world). It is these trances that attract a large number of pilgrims not only from India but all around the world. He was a great spiritual preacher who was considered an incarnation of god by many of his disciples, and is considered as such by many of his devotees today.

The temple and its adjoining areas stand on 25 acres of land. The Ganga River flows beside the temple with immense tranquility. To the east it houses twelve Shiv temples. To the north is a Radha-Krishna temple. There is a sort of courtyard behind the Shiv temple. Here stands the main temple where everyday, the Goddess Kali is worshipped with ceremonial elegance and splendor which can be characterized by a characterized by strong enthusiasm and devotion. There is a long spacious dancing hall in front of the temple, where the goddess Kali stands on the chest of lord Shiv with her splendor and glory. The whole ambience of this temple with the arboreta is extremely ethereal.

Even now, we get the blessings of Maa-Kali (mother Kali) from Dakshineshwar for any distress of life, any problem of mental agonies and anxieties or for any family criticalities to get peaceful solutions and successful achievements in fulfilling the prayers by the touch of her auspicious Nirmalya and Pujas (ceremonies) with pure heart. It is a must visit attraction for anyone who visits Kolkatha. Even if one is an atheist the devotional ambience that surrounds this place truly touches one’s heart.

Luxury trains in India take tourism to the next level. After all, guests coming from all the over world can surely take delight in exploring the country from an altogether new perspective. The various trains in this genre take guests on pleasure holiday, across the various destinations. While some of them have been designed to take guests across north India, some others take guests on a luxury sojourn across the southern part of the country. One of the options that come to mind at the very mention of a luxury train journey in India is that of the Golden Chariot. Not just the name, it actually is a golden chariot that carries its passengers on a trail across the heritages sites of the place, seated atop a luxury chair.

The heritage sites of South India are very different to those found in the other parts of the country. Mostly belonging to the medieval era, these destinations enable one to comprehend the societies and ways of living of the people of those times. These places take one across a fascinating journey and almost transform one to that era. Yes! Some of the most spectacular destinations of Karnataka including Hampi and Bangalore can also be explored onboard this train. However, what is the highlight of this trip is perhaps the blend, the mix of ideas and tastes that have been incorporated in a single journey of this luxury train in India.

With this article let us talk about the essence of all the 3 distinct trips, aboard the Golden Chariot.

Well, firstly the train is a joint venture of the Ministry of Railways and the State Government of Karnataka. Therefore utmost importance has been given to the overall package of the tour, thereby giving equal weight age to the tastes of the heritage, culture, history as well as wildlife lovers. Therefore where on one hand the trips take one across Bangalore and Mysore (heritage sites), it also takes one through the alleys of Kabini and Bandipur (wildlife sites) and also through Hassan and Hampi (culture sites). Moreover, it also takes one to Goa – the Paradise of India, especially for guests looking forward to beach holidays.

Secondly, the 3 trips have been designed in a way to enable guests to explore the first and the last junction of the tour, in a better manner. Therefore while 2 trips begin in Bangalore, one of them begins and ends in Goa. In this way guests can comfortably stay behind in these places and discover the facets that were left behind as a part of the itinerary of the luxury train. Or better still gauge the spirit of the place before embarking on the luxury journey.

Thirdly and importantly, the Golden Chariot offers guests – dining, conferencing as well as recreational facilities in order to offer them a complete package. No wonder, it is increasingly becoming one of the most fondly opted for luxury trains in India.

Wanted to explore the south India in a magnificence way? Author provides you the best information about the Golden Chariot – Luxury train in India.

Travel to a Popular Hill Stations in South India Yelagiri Hills–

If you are looking to get away from rampant commercialisation a-la-ooty style then Yelagiri hills is the place to be. You can sit back and relax in the comforting surroundings of lush green hills in cooler and quieter surroundings.
Yelagiri Hills is in Tamil Nadu is all set to emerge as the Para-gliding hotspot in India.
Yelagiri, at a height of 920 meters above sea level, stands majestically amidst four mountains. This is a hill station with a salubrious climate prevailing throughout the year so that winters do not keep visitors away. The main inhabitants of the area are the tribals who live in the 14 small villages which comprise Yelagiri.
Yelagiri is about 150 km from Bangalore and 250 km from Chennai (Madras), good for a four hour bike ride or car-drive with breaks along the way. Take the NH7 out of Bangalore towards Hosur, turn towards Chennai (onto NH46) at Krishnagiri and continue until you get just before Vaniyambadi. You can see the Hills from quite a distance (on your right). The routes are all marked with signboards in English. It takes about and hour to drive to the peak of the hill, the weather in Yelagiri is pleasant during summer and winter though its not as cold as Ooty or Kodaikanal especially in winters.
Please note there are no petrol stations in Yelagiri, thus you have to fillup the tank at the last available petrol station in the plains .Except for a few tyre changers there are no vehicle repair shops in the hills. Therefore it would be wise to carry a repair tool-kit in the car or bike with necessary tools in caseof need for on-road repairs.

Also, please take your first-aid kit along with your regular medicines, if any, with you. There is a government primary health centre, and a private clinic (in which the doctor is from CMC vellore). The nearest health centre is in Tirupattur.
Boating on Punganur Lake
This is an artificial lake, excavated in an area of 57 sq meters. The Elagiri Hills Development and Tourism Promotion
Society runs the Boat Club, with pedaling and rowing boats. There is a newly laid flori cultural garden with a pathway
along the bund with a panoramic view of the lake on one side and the garden on the other. A connecting bridge leads the
pathway around the lake. The pathway around the lake is particularly good for birding. There is also a small watch tower
constructed next to a tree which can be climbed.
Home made honey and jack fruit (on season) are available in Yellagiri Hills. Even the Home made Honey can be get from
YMCA with Good Quality and taste, You can believe that it is original. Otherwise you have to check whether its original.
There is a small house near YMCA, where you can get pure malai thein (mountain honey). The weekly market (Sandhai)
assembles in Athanavoor on fridays.

A travel freak , I love mountain tourim especially in the Himalayas and the South Indian Hill Stations

Have you ever wished to explore the rustic village life in Kerala while staying on waters? Have you ever dreamed of watching skiff-fishermen launching their cockleshell boats? Have you ever wanted to spot the large flocks of domesticated ducks waddling down to the water from thatched houses on the banks? – If yes, then Houseboats in Kerala serve as the best possible medium for all your desires.

Kettuvalloms (huge traditional boats in Kerala) were earlier used to carry tonnes of rice, spices and other such materials. In the past few years, these have been reformed as ‘Luxurious Houseboats’ to provide the tourists with the true joy of spending their vacations on enchanting backwaters. Houseboats provide the wonderful opportunity to discover the enchanting backwaters and lively villages of Kerala.

Features of Houseboats

Kettuvalloms are converted into houseboats with using only natural products like bamboo mats, sticks, wood of the aracanut and coconut trees, coir mats, wooden planks etc. Even the arrangement for lighting is done with solar panels.

Modern Houseboats are equipped with all the comforts and amenities of a star rated hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Each houseboat is also provided with a sun deck, spacious living/dining area, spacious passage, fire extinguishers, safe fuel storage facilities, good quality linen blankets and towels, and professional cooks.

The Vembanad Lake in Kerala is known as the largest backwater stretch of the entire state. It takes you to Alappuzha, Kottayam, Kochi and several other places. These eco-friendly houseboats take you to a journey of the untouched and inaccessible rural Kerala.

The most attractive feature of your Kerala tour is undoubtedly the luxurious Kerala houseboat. These houseboats not only provide the luxurious facilities and comforts of a star rated hotel, but also provide the excellent opportunity to explore the divine green beauty while living on waters. Plan a Kerala houseboat tour while on a Kerala trip and stay as close to the mother nature as possible.
