The Highlights of Hurghada

World Travel Diary — By NikhilBhide on January 25, 2010 at 17:55

Hurghada began life as a sleepy little fishing village, yet established itself as the first commercial dive centre in the Red Sea region during the1960’s. It has emerged into a thriving tourist resort, attracting keen divers and snorkelers from all over the world. Holidays in Hurghada will take you to Egypt’s Red Sea resort and a 40km stretch of beautiful coastline adorned with hotels and guest houses, from the simplest of accommodation to five star luxury hotels.

Holidays in Hurghada enjoy a warm, dry climate all year round. July and August can see temperatures often hit 40°C so can be a little uncomfortable, although this does make the sea water very warm and ideal for divers and snorkelers, while December and January are the coolest months yet can still manage quite high temperatures.

If you are not particularly into diving though, don’t worry, as holidays in Hurghada still have plenty to offer. The fabulous sandy beaches stretch for mile after mile and are a sun worshipper’s paradise. Straw covered umbrellas and swinging mattress strewn beds are dotted along the beach and most hotels have their own private stretches. Bedouin tents offer respite from the heat and leisurely camel rides offer the perfect distraction from lazing in the sun.

Above sea level activities include sailing, deep sea fishing and wind surfing plus there’s always Sinbad Submarine, a stylishly coloured yellow sub that takes you down to depths of 22m so you can see the fabulous underwater world here without getting wet.

Land excursions on holidays in Hurghada will include jeep safaris which will whisk you at high speed through the desert, or choose the quad bike, or more sedate camel option. Bedouin Nights will take you to an isolated camp where you will be treated to food, drink and camp side singing and dancing whilst the sun sets dramatically over the rugged horizon.

Shopping on holidays in Hurghada is a fantastic experience with canvas covered souks inviting you to haggle for those all important souvenirs. Traders will offer a cup of fragrant mint or hibiscus tea, and you may also be asked to sign their guest books. Leather goods, brassware, jewellery, rugs, shishas, fragrant spices and crafts are amongst the fabulous gifts available here.

Nightlife around the resort is relatively low key however most hotels have excellent entertainment packages, bars and nightclubs to keep guests of all ages amused.

Holidays in Hurghada are the perfect choice for scuba divers and snorkelers, however there is still so much more to this beautiful Red Sea Resort than first meets the eye.
