Telethon 2009 is Underway in Costa Rica

The heart of solidarity of Costa Rica was tested again because Telethon 2009 took place this past weekend at the Palacio de los Deportes (Sports Palace) in Heredia. A circus show opened the charity event. Animators and artists joined forces to achieve the goal along with the public. The challenge this year is to raise ¢500 million to equip the Trauma and Rehabilitation Unit at the Children’s Hospital.

Among the highlights was the participation of Panamanian group Los Rabanes, who officially launched their single “¡Qué vaina!” (What a Problem!). Bantan, Shel, Mari Boquitas, Renato and Peruvian showgirl Maribel Velarde were also present in Costa Rica.

This is the first time the telethon has gotten so risqué with a feather and sequin dance from the well-known Peruvian showgirl. She was invited by Club Activo 20-30 and she decided not to pass up the opportunity. She said that she loves children, she does not have a boyfriend and she hopes that the goal for this year can be reached.

Jeffrey Chaves, president of Club Activo 20-30, said there are several ways to donate and many of them without leaving your home. ”One is account number123452030-2 at the National Bank, another is text messaging the numbers 2032 and 2035, and another is the 900 lines 9. There is also ayudemos.com and mini-telethons,” said the president.

These mini-telethons were found in several parks around the country: Plaza de la Cultura, Guadalupe, Coronado, Alajuelita, Santo Domingo in Heredia and Juan Santamaría in Alajuela, as well as the Musmanni parking lot in Escazú Musmanni, El Dorado shopping center and Galerias Cartago.

The total numbers from the various events are still awaiting tabulation in Costa Rica. It is hoped that the goal for this year was achieved. There can be no nobler cause than to try to assist children at the trauma unit in the National Children’s Hospital.
