Early planning stages for a wedding and want to do something fun for the reception. We’re thinking about a picnic or backyard, but we’ve also considered the children’s museum or a bowling alley. Any suggestions?

First I’d ask yourself – what will be the most comfortable place for you – the backyard picnic or in a museum or bowling alley? Are you both bowling fanatics? Then that would be a perfect way to incorporate your other hobby/love into your wedding celebration.

Also you’ll want to take into consideration your budget. The reason why i say this is because you may have more fun at the museum but you may have to skimp on the other aspects – such as the meal, drinks, cake, etc. If those things are super important to you, then you may want to save some on the location/venue price and go big on the food, drinks, entertainment, # of people you can invite.

Unfortunately you really want to sit down and figure out your budget first and foremost (UGH! i know – but it is really very important) Once you’ve got that out of the way, you can get on with the fun stuff. I’m in the process of planning a wedding as well, and the hardest part is the budgeting (especially if the guy doesn’t want to talk financials).

As for getting reception ideas, you should check out – you’ll find some good ideas about color, receptions and themes, ways to save, and tons of things that you might want to read/think about. Good luck with your wedding and I’m sure it will turn out great!

We had our wedding reception and wedding on a dining yacht. The wedding took place an hour before the boat left the dock, and then it was a three hour dinner cruise.

Some other thoughts are state parks, on a farm, an ice skating rink, roller skating rink, backyard BBQ, on a houseboat.

Some other information would really help. What state are you in? What time of year will it be? Does the wedding have a theme? How many people? Do you have any hobbies that you might want to include?

I think having your reception at a museum is a great idea! I know a lot of brides that do that! It might be a little pricey, but they always turn out incredible!

Picnic receptions are fun because there is such a large choice of beautiful inexpensive decorating ideas. Also, you can get really creative with the food choices, and it is more informal. You can decorate with beautiful plants and flowers in planters that you can actually use in/around your home after the wedding instead of wasting all that money on picked flowers.
