What do newlyweds do on their honeymoon in terms of contraceptives?

FieryRose asked:

My boyfriend and I have been dating for nine months, and marriage has been an open topic for a long time. Recently we started wondering about the honeymoon; more specifically, what kind of contraceptives are usually used. We’re not sexually active, so we don’t know what works best or what we’d be comfortable with.

Not only am I a bit of a romantic who would prefer not to deal with condoms and such on her honeymoon, but my boyfriend has actually told me that he doesn’t feel comfortable with condoms. So even after the honeymoon, what’s a form of contraceptive that we can both be comfortable with?

I am forever indebted to you for this inforatomin.

Since it seems that neither of you may want to bother with birth control you could try to have him “pull out” that would still keep some of the romance. There is a chance that if you have not been sexually active he may not be able to control it but that may sound like the best choice for you two.

get on the pill, but make sure you do it before you get married, as it takes at least a month for it to be effective.

an oral birth control pill would probably be the nicest for you.

A few months before your wedding, make yourself an appointment with your gyno. They will do an exam, make sure you are in good health, and write you a prescription. Then you will have a few months for your body to adjust to the birth control hormones and you should be totally ready to go by your honeymoon :)

My husband and I weren’t into the idea of condoms either. To this day we have never used one lol. I used the pill for a few years and then we decided to start having children :)

There are two main things to consider when having sex, whether you are newlyweds or not. Protecting yourself from STDs and pregnancy (unless of course you are trying for a baby). There are several methods of contraception available (injections, pill, etc) so I suggest prior to your honeymoon you speak with your GP about the best option for you. If either of you have been sexually active or have suffered from cold sores prior to your honeymoon, use a condom. It is the ONLY WAY to protect yourself from a STD. Condoms have also come a LONG way in the past few years so I would be surprised if your partner couldn’t find one they could tolerate.

since you both do not want to use condoms, then your other choices would be:

Diaphragm: You must be fitted for a diaphragm at a doctor’s office or clinic because diaphragms come in several different sizes. The diaphragm must stay in place at least 6 hours after intercourse, but not for more than 24 hours. If you have *** more than once while wearing the diaphragm, you must add more spermicide without taking the diaphragm out

Cervical Cap: You must go to your doctor or clinic to be fitted for the cervical cap. It comes in several different sizes. The cervical cap must be used with spermicide, which is available in drugstores without a prescription. You can leave it in place for 48 hours.

Birth Control Pills: There are two types of birth control pills: “combined oral contraceptives” and“minipills.” Minipills are slightly less effective than combined oral contraceptives.

Depo-Provera is a form of progestin, similar to the hormone in the minipill. Depo-Provera must be injected with a needle into the woman’s buttocks or arm muscle by a doctor. You must get an injection every three months for the birth control to continue to work

An IUD (Intra-Uterine Device) is inserted into the womb by a doctor. The Paragard IUD can stay in place for 10 years. The Progestasert must be replaced every year. A doctor must remove it.

The risks and benefits of different forms of birth control are different for each person. So it’s best to decide with your doctor which form of birth control is best for you.

Get a pre-marital gyn exam and discuss it at length with your doctor. Make sure you go well in advance of your marriage so that if it’s a contraceptive that has to be timed with your cycle, you’ll be protected. Best wishes.

  • Iamme says:

Start taking the pill before the wedding. Make sure to start taking it though over a month before hand as that is how long it takes to start working or get the shot that lasts a month then there is definately no worrying

  • Iamstitch2U says:

The pills, plan and simple, sounds like your best option. Low doses now a days, very few if any problems with it for the vast majority of people. And you and your BF are right about condoms.

  • luvhnaj says:

Lets start off with ,have you been to a OBGYN yet? You really should be seeing one yearly and that is the best person to discuss this with. There are so many types of birth control and you and your Dr. can discuss which one is right for your life style. Good luck with any decision you should have.

  • barbieisagoddess says:

either the depo-provera shot or the pill personally i would recommend the shot because then you don’t have to remember to take the pill everyday on the honeymoon. the only problem is that nothing protects against STD’s so make sure your husband and you both get tested to make sure you are clean and i always recommend a backup method just in case—and condoms really aren’t that bad

There are plenty of different birth control methods out there. You could look into getting on the pill. Or my favorite is the NuvaRing.. You put it in and leave it for 3 weeks. At the end of the 3rd week you take it out for a week and should get your period during that time.. Then at the end of that week you put a new one back in.. It is simple and doesnt require a lot of thought.. Talk to your doctor and see what he/she thinks would be best for you.. Best of Luck….

Oral contraceptives or , what Iam currently looking in to, Mirena.

  • justanotherunknown says:

Your best bet would be to discuss your options with your gynocologist. He/She would be better suited to lay out all of your options.

Personally, if it was me, I would opt to start taking the Pill about 2 months before getting married, since you can still get pregnant while on it for the first month.

But like I said, your doctor will be able to give you all of the options, including the pros and cons of each one.

  • desperatehw says:

First of all, condoms don’t have to be unromantic, they can be a form of foreplay, it is all in your attitude. But if you are sure that neither you nor your husband has an STD to worry about, then you can be the one to handle the birth control. Here’s an idea!!!! Go see the gynocologist NOW, before the wedding and honeymoon and get expert advice on the many types of birth control out there, and how effective they are, and the pros and cons of each type.

  • cristennamarie says:

Try the patch, it was our favorite before we settled on the IUD. Most doctors won’t give you the IUD unless you have children already. The patch is so easy, why would you choose anything?

  • abmainer says:

People have told me that IUD’s work well. I know some people that have them and they say they don’t even know they are there. You can also get them taken out later on if you want to have kids. Have fun. Heard about sponges but don’t know much about them. I was on the pill for a long time. Hope these suggestions help.

  • Angie says:

you could get on birth control. there are a lot of options. there are shots the doctor can give you, or a pill or patches. there are a lot of options. also if you were wanting children anytime soon after the wedding then you wont have to use any at all =] good luck and congrats!

  • AMYalmostROACH says:

the pill, deporovera, diaphram, pullout not very effective, just putting on a condom right before he goes. there are tons look online

  • Masho says:

Birth control would be your best bet, in my opinion.

  • nicole says:

birth control.. or look into an iud.. its surgically inserted and u cant get pregnant until its removed. u can get one that last 5 yrs or 10 yrs.. u can have it removed anytime..

  • Taka says:

Call me strange, but I thought when you’re married you don’t have to worry about contraceptives.

  • Zoe G says:

Get the Depo Porvera shot. You only take it once a month at a doctor office.

  • Sharp Marble says:
